Set in 500 acres of historically designed landscape, Yorkshire Sculpture Park (YSP) is an international centre for the creation, display and appreciation of modern and contemporary art. For over 40 years, residencies have been at the heart of YSP offering opportunities for early career and emerging artists to reflect and move forward with their practice.
In 2018 they launched the Yorkshire Graduate Award. Building on this successful residency programme, YSP is offering another placement for a recently graduated BA or MA artist, from any Yorkshire-based university, to work and stay on-site from summer/autumn 2021 onwards. They understand – now more than ever – the importance of opportunities for early career artists to reflect and move forward with their practice after graduation, so this year’s Yorkshire Graduate Award will go ahead when safe to do so. As COVID-19 restrictions begin to ease slowly throughout the year, YSP will be flexible in setting the dates for the residency, including exploring dates in 2022, or digitally if preferred.
This Award is for anyone graduating from a Yorkshire university in 2021, and comprises: a residency for up to four weeks at YSP, on-site accommodation, access to our facilities including metal and wood workshops, studio space and half a day with their Technical Team. The awardee will receive £500 to develop new ideas and/or for materials, and will receive a critique from YSP’s Curatorial Team. There is also the opportunity for a public facing element – once restrictions allow– for example, an event or open studio, which would be supported by presence on YSP’s social media and website.
If this is of interest, please submit a PDF document of no more than five pages including a short statement on your current practice, any information about your final degree work (including if you expect to have a degree show), images of your work and a simple outline of your plans if you were to be offered the residency. This plan does not have to be definitive and can change during the course of the residency.
Applications should be submitted to curators@ysp.org.uk before 2pm on Monday 31 May 2021, allowing time for application considerations and for members of the Curatorial Team to visit/or view your degree show (if any digital or physical shows are planned for 2021). Please note, in the current climate, a physical degree show is not required to be eligible.
