The National Trust in York opens its doors for the Heritage Open Days festival this September.
Visit Treasurer’s House in the heart of York for free on the weekends of 8 and 9 and 15 and 16 September. Head to the city fringes for a wander around Goddards House and Garden on 8 and 9 September or head out to the countryside for a stroll around Beningbrough Hall, Gallery and Gardens on the weekend of 15 and 16 September.
The National Trust is offering free entry to explore three of its special houses and gardens in York to coincide with the Heritage Open Days festival this month. England’s biggest heritage festival brings local history to life through the places on your doorstep. Come and celebrate history, architecture and culture with the National Trust in York, you’ll find something for all the family to enjoy and explore.
Frank Green’s Treasurer’s House tucked behind the Minster, is lavishly filled with his personal collection of antiques, ceramics and paintings collected from around the world. The house was visited by Edward VII and Queen Alexandra as Prince and Princess of Wales along with their daughter Victoria and rooms were named in their honour. Treasurer’s was also once the home of Georgian astronomer John Goodricke who made an amazing discovery in the night sky. Join a tour on both weekends to find out more about the star that influenced the course of science.
Hop on a bus and find Goddards House and Garden on the edge of the Knavesmire. Goddards is an intimate Arts and Crafts style home commissioned by Noel Terry who wanted to create a comfortable family home close to the chocolate works for Kathleen, his wife and his children. This gorgeous hand crafted house was finished in 1927 and today is home to fascinating mementoes from the Terry family and the chocolate business. The five acres of gardens include abundant herbaceous borders, pristine lawns divided into rooms, a craggy rock garden and a working kitchen garden. Take a moment on the terrace and enjoy a traditional scone with a cup of tea.
Travel a little out to the country to get a flavour of Beningbrough Hall, Gallery and Gardens on the Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th by exploring the house and gardens. Beningbrough has seen some exciting new developments this year with its largest temporary portrait exhibition, ‘Making her mark: celebrating creative women’ in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery. Many portraits had not seen outside of London and they’ll be returning this autumn. A new Pergola has been installed in the eight acres, providing a beautiful, tranquil spot to relax for a moment and there’s plenty of late summer colour with dahlias on the south border.
