Two Day Embroidery Retreat
October 15 - October 16
We are really excited to reveal the second part to our Creative Workshop Series, an Embroidery Retreat here at Ripley Castle with the super talented textile artist Eppie Thompson from The Fabled Thread.
We have been plotting this collaboration for a while and we just can’t wait to welcome Eppie (who is originally from Yorkshire) for her first “up north” retreat. Eppie is the textile artist behind embroidery business The Fabled Thread. Her work takes inspiration from folk art and world textiles, with storytelling at the heart of each piece. She is passionate about teaching sewing and the powers of the craft. Her work has been featured in Vogue, Elle, House & Garden and many more!
About the retreat:
Over the two days, Eppie will be guiding you to create an imagined embroidered landscape. Whilst some prior sewing knowledge will be helpful, Eppie will first spend sometime introducing you to the basics of embroidery and a couple of core stitches. We will then go onto to colour theory and selecting colour palettes, for both the embroidery and the hand-painted frame you will design. By the end of the first day we will each have chosen a colour palette, painted the base coats on the frame and created a design.
The second day will then be focused on starting to stitch your design, choosing which stitches to use where and how to translate the design elements to the fabric. Eppie will guide you through various sources of inspiration and methodologies for how to use that inspiration in your own work, so you don’t need to come with any prior ideas of what you want to create before the session. No drawing or painting skills are required as Eppie will be on hand to guide through all the stages.
At the end of the workshop, you will have a full design to carry on stitching at home, as well as having hand painted the frame to accompany your piece.
The retreat will take place in some of the most historically important rooms and spaces in the castle which are normally reserved for weddings and very special events, but for this year we wanted to open our doors to creativity.
On both days of the retreat, our in house chefs will be providing delicious lunches and snacks, to ensure we keep our energy up for the retreat.
Admission to the Gardens and Grounds on both days will be included for free for our attendees, so you can absorb and explore our beautiful and unique surroundings to help inspire your embroidery landscape creations with Eppie.
Our hope is that this retreat will provide a welcomed escape from the day to day and we think the the combination of switching off and focusing on what you can make with your own hands, in addition to the North Yorkshire fresh air and calming surroundings, you will leave feeling revived and recharged, something we all need from time to time.
There are very limited places for this event, so we recommend booking early to avoid missing out.
