Award winning Bolton Castle is a great family location jam-packed with history and nature.
This medieval castle has five floors including a dungeon and a tower with views across Wensleydale. The Tea Room is a warm location with blazing fires on colder days, and a cool respite from the sun. The gardens include garden ‘rooms’ and a maze. The open season offers a free programme of re-enactor events, plus daily falconry displays and have-a-go archery. In the school holidays, seasonal trails and family activities, are also available, plus ticketed events such as outdoor theatre. Groups are always welcome and tailored tours as well as daily tours are available. Bolton Castle is available year-round for weddings. For the first time at Bolton Castle, watch out for a stunning exhibition charting the life and death of Mary Queen of Scots opening 2027!

Opening times
Open everyday from 10am to 5pm, Saturday 7 March – Sunday 1 November 2026. Occasionally closed for weddings and private events, please check the website for details.
Directions
Approximately 5 miles west of Leyburn. Follow A684 to Wensley, turn right towards Redmire and Carperby (also brown signed) and castle will be seen soon after Redmire village.
